The Warren Center Giving Campaign
Andrew’s Story
We were so excited to learn that grandchild number three was on the way! BUT we learned, through a genetic screening, that our Andrew has Down Syndrome. There were a few emotionally moments when we got the news. We had time to get our heads wrapped around what all this meant long before he arrived. Our biggest worry was his heart and knowing he would need surgery.
When Andrew as a few months old, he had his first therapy session with Bernardine of The Warren Center. At first it was tele-visits due to Covid. But soon she faithfully came to the home and worked with our Andrew. He did have heart surgery at seven months and this delayed him further in his skills. But soon he was sitting up, crawling, and finally walking and feeding himself! Bernardine gave instructions that the rest of the family learned so we could build on what Bernardine was doing. Learning how to offer Andrew something as simple as a French fry and seeing him move through the stages of whole hand grasp to finger grasp was the milestones we saw because of Andrew’s work with Bernardine. Andrew went through the at home therapy, the transition at the Garland campus, continues with speech therapy and is now enrolled in school. The Warren Center is a large part of Andrew’s world, helping (or forcing him sometimes) to DO! He is a happy child with the wonder of the world ahead of him.
How You Can Help
The Warren Center has been center stage for our family: https://thewarrencenter.org/toddler-down-syndrome-name-walking/. They have the capabilities to help every child see the smallest of milestones accomplished. There is no question the work The Warren Center does is phenomenal. Some children have more severe issues than Andrew, and some have less. Regardless, no child is turned away for the family’s ability to pay or the child’s developmental difference!! Even just a few dollars help keep therapist in the homes, at the campuses, and on call. Your financial gift is absolutely key to keeping The Warren Center at the center of stage for all the children and the families they serve.
